Replacing the Optical Drive in an Acer TravelMate
And possibly other Acer Notebooks too...
These instructions are based on information submitted by Tim Alder. Take a minute to read my generic disassembly instructions before you begin.
Tim reported, "I discovered that just removing one screw enables replacement of optical drives - no dis-assembly required. This fact was further obscured by Acer actually originally stating that you could not buy drives over the counter and would have to pay in addition the equivalent of GBP25 labour to have it replaced."
You can get generic replacement 'slim' drives relatively easily, for example the Philips SCB5265.
Disclaimer: you are about to rip into your notebook. If you are careful, you will do minimal damage. If you do this, you are probably invalidating your factory warranty, and could cause expensive problems. If you do, I can take NO RESPONSIBILITY. Hopefully these notes help you decide whether the risk is worth it.
Getting started
- Download a copy of the service manual from this site.
- Eject drive platter if possible via eject button, otherwise via straightened paper clip in the emergency release hole
- Turn off your notebook, unplug it from the AC adaptor and remove the battery
Getting amongst it
- Remove screw as indicated from base of notebook
- Remove (pull out) drive assembly
Stick it all back together
- Remove retaining bracket and fascia from old drive and refit on new (jeweler's star screwdriver will assist with bracket)
- Insert new drive and press home
- Replace retaining screw in base of notebook
- Replace battery, power up and hopefully you're all done!
